The symptoms of autism are real and severe, and you want to be informed about them because you never know when the information will come in handy. For one, you may have a child that suffers from the relentless developmental disorder and you may never know it. They may be an adult, a child, or an infant, but being able to identify the autism symptoms that they display will go a long way in helping you with some diagnoses, and with the best course of action to take care of the situation.

Generally, autism symptoms are social, behavioral, mental, and unusual in nature. On the social front, an infant suffering from autism will have a notable absence of the ’social smile’. By the second to third month of their lives, babies are able to recognize sounds and gestures in their environments, and if they like them, they smile.

Autistic infants don’t respond.. Toddlers and infants alike at this stage also display poor eye contact and do not enjoy the company of others. By the time they are adults, they would never have developed typical friendships or relationships with parents or siblings because they mostly seem to be unaware of other people’s feeling. They often end up going through life alone.

You may not be able to tell if an infant has communication skills or impairments because a normal child usually doesn’t get to talk until they are close to eighteen months old or beyond. However, by the age of three, you can tell that a toddler has autistic symptoms when they fail to make a lot of gestures or learn speech patterns.

Even when they can speak, a toddler with autism will more than likely parrot your words back at you without saying anything of their own. As they grow into adulthood, an autistic patient may eventually overcome some of their speech impairments, but they will likely retain their penchant for the misuse of pronouns, saying things like ‘You will go,’ when in fact they mean the first person.

All autistic patients suffer from restrictive interests and repetitive behavior, but these symptoms are not readily obvious in infants and toddlers. However, adult or teenager with autism will have a number of intense interests like a toy or characters from a cartoon, or in certain parts of objects. Often they will insist on having their way – the same old boring routine everyday – and any attempt to change that would cause them to hurt themselves or make a racket.

Children with autism are very likely to be very sensitive to something in particular, like a specific texture, a sound, or a smell. As they grow into adulthood, this characteristic lessens but remains, and they will likely be like that in some way for the rest of their lives.

One of the most fascinating symptoms of autism in toddlers and in adults is their savant skills. They may experience a decrease in verbal intelligence or difficulty in understanding cause and effect relationships, but they could also demonstrate particular skills in certain other areas, such as math and science, and the arts. This you may see as a symptom, but it is a characteristic you may never be able to rid the autism patient of all the way from infancy to adulthood.
