Autism is not the kind of disease that goes away – this is the despair of people who have loved ones suffering from the debilitating developmental disorder. Once you have a loved one diagnosed with the condition, you just have to settle back and hope that some breakthrough research will one day yield results that will cure the condition. Until then, you are going to live with the patient from childhood to adulthood, or even to the golden years.
Otherwise, you would need to commit them into some home where they can be cared for” by caregivers. The prognosis of autism is not particularly encouraging, but life never is. If you look that far into the future, what you have to see is what you can do with it, not what you cannot. When you have a loved one suffering from autism, you simply have to believe that you can be with them and help them through the worst of it. Sure, in the absence of a cure for the condition, the only other thing you can do is to ensure that they live comfortably.
The symptoms of autism often begin in early childhood: social and communicative difficulties, weird and aloneness behavior, restricted awareness or repetitiveness, preoccupation with” almost nothing, strange body movements, extreme actions when frustrated, extra sensitivity to simple and mundane stimuli, sometimes mental retardation, and sometimes savant abilities. These are lots to handle for anybody; but realizing that most of these symptoms remain as they are even as this person grows into maturity and later life can be uncomforting. Some of the symptoms of autism do rescind with time, but most of them don’t.
The extent of the development you are able to impart in the mind of a patient suffering from autism in what determines how well they will get as far as they come of age. There are lots of therapies and training processes you could use to teach development to an autistic patient, and they are all rather helpful.
The Floortime system is one, which brings parent and suffering child together, the TEACH system is another, and the Lovaas treatment therapy for autistic children is another. Mostly, these efforts seek to teach language skills and intelligence to the patient and improve their communication abilities overall. If unfortunately, the extent of suffering of each patient varies, hence their abilities to learn also may be variously impaired.
There are some patients who have high-functioning autism who are able to learn enough to live and work independently. As a matter of fact, there are records of some adults with certain forms of autism who have pursued professional careers in the arts or sciences, such as veterinary medicine, mathematics and arithmetic, or writing.
For a fact, adults who suffer from an autism spectrum disorder like Asperger’s syndrome are able to develop out of the ordinary approaches to prevail over problems that they may have with their memory or with understanding emotions in others. That way, they are able to communicate better, and actually appear as though they understand what they are feeling.
There however are also adults who suffer more severely from autism and who cannot live on their own. Such adults may have to be remanded to foster care, or have need of considerable communal sustenance in a suburban neighborhood. When the adult has limited speech patterns, close supervision will have to be kept over them, whether they are in your home, or in a group residence, or some other residential location.
It can be rather hard caring for an autistic adult, but it can also be rewarding. You will only know it if you take the journey.
