The suffering of patients that have autism is something that brings great concern to family members and medical professionals alike. For the psychoanalysts, it is perhaps the enigmatic nature of the disease that has made them so profoundly interested; but for family, it is the fact that they will have to live with the patient and their suffering for the rest of their lives. This realization is not an easy thing to deal with.

There are many treatment procedures that are used for the handling of patients suffering from autism, most which are clinically sanctioned. The Floortime system of training and therapy to help patients bond better with their family or their caregivers is one, the TEACH approach (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children) is another, while the behavioral modification system perfected by American psychologist Ivar Lovaas, is a promising third.

No, they do not cure the disease, but at least they give a glimmer of hope that the loved ones of the patient can hang on to for the duration of the life of the patient.

Several medications that treat autistic symptoms are also available, and they are useful in the management of many of the related indications and warning signs of the syndrome. Risperdal is one such, and others include several serotonin reuptake inhibitors that have been known and used to successfully treat compulsive behaviors in autism. Prozac, Luvox, and Lexapro are good examples that also have various side effects that require you to exercise some care.

Various alternative treatments for autism, autism related symptoms and disorders have surfaced over time. Many are still in the testing phase while an assortment of clinicians and parents have gone ahead to practice a few, even without prior testing or approval by sanctioning bodies. For instance, the treatment of autism by the provision of special vitamin supplements to the sufferer has been attempted.

Various vitamins known to be helpful to the mental development of the child are introduced to help improve their brain functions. Making dietary changes is another autism treatment effort that also falls into this category, especially since it does not cause any special distress to the patient.

Heavy metal chelation is another alternative treatment practice that some parents and rogue psychologists have attempted in the treatment of patients suffering from autism. It is largely frowned upon by the majority of the medical community, especially because it is a lot more invasive for the sufferer, and had caused the death of at least one patient already without really yielding any positive results.

The therapy procedure includes the introduction of chemicals into the body to remove heavy metal deposits of mercury and cadmium which some believe contribute to the inability of the autism patient to develop mentally and function on their own.

Various other practices in the treatment of autism have sparked controversies over time, especially since no one is really clear about what the exact causes of the set of symptoms are. However, with research still ongoing, there is hope that someday, someone will eventually find the cause of the condition, and thereby, the cure.
